Editing Table Content

More ways to edit values than you can shake a stick at.

Editing Values #

When editing a value in Querious:

  • Edits to an existing row are generally saved as soon as you finish editing the value. (There is no separate "Save" step, unless you're using the Field Value Editor to edit the value in a separate window.)
  • A new row is bordered in green and saved when you select another row or view.
  • Type NULL to set a value to NULL.
  • Use the Field Value Editor window to set a value directly via SQL, hex, or load from a file.
  • If a modified row is bordered in yellow, then it couldn't be found in the table after the modification was made. Simply reresh the table.
  • Read-only (ex: Generated) columns can still have their text selected, but modifications will not stick.

To edit a value, you can:

  1. Edit the value inline in the row list.
  2. Edit the value in a separate window (as a popover or modal window).
  3. Context menu: Set a value directly to NULL
  4. Context menu: Set a field in multiple rows to the same value

See Navigating Table Content for moving between values while editing.

Editing Inline or In a Window #

Most values are edited inline in the table, but in Querious's preferences you can explicitly set some types to be edited in a separate window so you have more room. (See Edit in separate window in the Result Rows preferences.)

Result Rows preferences

When doing so, double-clicking columns with these types will open an editor in a separate window.

The Contextual Menu #

Right-click a value for commands that act on it, its row, or its column. If you right-click inside the selection, commands apply to every selected row. Otherwise they apply only to the row you clicked.

Values #

Command What it does
Copy Value for "column" Copies one value.
Copy Values of "column" in N Rows Copies one column's values from the selected rows, with one value per line.
Copy DISTINCT Values of "column"… Copies each distinct value in the column, from all rows in the table — OR, if a search is applied, only the rows matching the current search.
Edit Value for "column"… Opens the value in the separate editing window, whatever its type.
Set Value for "column" in N Rows… With several rows selected, sets the column to the same value in all of them. Use it to fix a status on a batch of rows, or to fill in a new column.
Set NULL Value for "column" Sets the value to NULL, in one row or in every selected row.
Set as SQL Expression… Sets the value to an expression the server evaluates, such as NOW() or UUID(), instead of a literal. For a value that's already an expression, Set as the column's type switches back.

Search & Relations #

Command What it does
Load All Values in Row / in All Rows Loads large values that were left unloaded. See Unloaded Columns.
Add "column" to Search… Adds a search condition for the column. See Searching and Sorting.
Jump to Foreign Row Shows the row a foreign key value points to by navigating to the other table and finding that row.
Show Related Rows… Shows rows in other tables related to this one by foreign keys.

Rows #

Command What it does
Duplicate Row Adds a copy of the row to edit before it's saved.
Copy Row / Copy Rows Opens a panel to choose the format (such as CSV, Tab, or SQL INSERT statements) and the columns, then copies. The choices are remembered.
Refresh Row / Refresh N Rows Re-reads the rows from the server, to see changes made elsewhere.

Table #

Command What it does
Refresh All Rows Re-reads all the displayed rows from the server.
Jump to Column… Scrolls to a column by name. See Navigating Table Content.
Show View Options… Opens the Table View Options.
Import into Table… Imports data into this table. See Importing.
Export Results… Exports only the rows the current search found. See Exporting.
Export Table… Exports the whole table. See Exporting.

The Vertical Editor #

Use the vertical editor to work on one row at a time. It lists the selected row's fields top to bottom, which is far easier to read and edit than a wide row with many columns.

The vertical editor in the right sidebar

Display the right sidebar with the button in the toolbar, or select EditorToggle Sidebar. The sidebar's panel buttons at the very top allow you to show the vertical editor and the Relationships panel, or show both at once.

  • Select a row in the table to see its fields. Only one row at a time can be edited in the vertical editor.
  • Option-click a field to edit it in a separate window.
  • A value that hasn't been loaded yet, such as a large blob, is loaded when you click it.
  • Foreign key columns have the same jump button as in the table.
  • Multi-line values show up to five lines.

Layout #

The popup at the right of the top bar switches between two layouts:

  • One Column puts each field's name above its value. Best in a narrow sidebar.
  • Two Columns puts names in a column beside the values. Drag the divider between them to resize the name column, and Querious remembers the width for each table.

Finding a Field #

Tables with dozens of columns are easier to navigate with the controls along the top:

  • Click the bolt button to type the name of a field to jump to.
  • The search field can be used to either: hide fields that don't match (Filter Fields), or scroll to and highlight the first match (Jump to Field). Choose which behavior you want from the field's magnifying glass menu.
