Group objects by type or by name, so a schema with hundreds of tables is easier to navigate.

Grouping by Type #

Group Objects by Type puts tables, views, functions, procedures, triggers, and events each under their own group folder.

To group by type

  1. Right-click anywhere in the sidebar.
  2. Choose Group Objects by Type.

When using this setting, you still have access to all types, but don't need to see them all at the same time.

Grouping by Name #

If your table naming scheme uses commonly-shared prefixes such as:

  • user_profiles, user_sessions, user_settings
  • store_line_items, store_orders, store_products
  • EquipmentCategories, EquipmentModels, EquipmentItems

… then using Group Objects by Name will automatically group those related tables into group folders. (A group is only made if the would be 3 or more items in it.)

Right-click in the sidebar, go to the Group Objects by Name submenu, and choose one of the two, which are named after the convention they demonstrate:

Choice How names are split Example
separated_by_underscores At _ characters. user_profiles, user_sessions and user_settings group under user.
UsingCamelCase At camel-case boundaries. OrderHeader, OrderLine and OrderStatus group under Order.

Choose the active option again to turn name grouping off.

Icon Size #

The Sidebar Icon Size submenu in the same contextual menu offers Small, Medium, and Large. Smaller rows fit more objects on screen; larger rows are easier to hit precisely.
